Pubs in Lee-on-the-Solent
Local pubs, beer gardens and where to have a pint
Lee-on-the-Solent has a modest but well-liked selection of pubs, each with its own character and regulars. The town is not overloaded with drinking establishments, but the ones it has are genuine locals where you can walk in on your own and feel welcome.
The Bun Penny on Elmore Road is probably the best known. It takes its name from the old penny coins featuring Queen Victoria in a hair bun, and the pub itself has been a fixture in Lee for decades. There is a beer garden at the rear which gets busy on warm evenings and weekends. Food is served, with a fairly standard pub menu covering burgers, pies, and Sunday roasts. Quiz nights and occasional live music keep the calendar ticking over. It draws a broad crowd, from families eating out to groups of friends settling in for the evening.
The Old Ship on the High Street sits closer to the seafront end of town. This is the more traditional boozer of the two, with a straightforward bar, a dartboard, and the sort of atmosphere where conversations happen easily between strangers. It has served the town for well over a century and retains a properly local feel. Dogs are welcome, which makes it a natural stop for walkers coming off the promenade.
Beyond Lee itself, the Osborne View along the coast toward Hill Head functions as both pub and restaurant, with a position overlooking the Solent that draws visitors from across the area. It is busier and more food-oriented than the town centre pubs, and booking is wise at weekends.
Stubbington and Gosport, both a short drive away, broaden the options considerably. The Golden Bowler in Stubbington and the various Gosport High Street pubs provide alternatives when a change of scene is wanted. For real ale enthusiasts, the Gosport CAMRA scene is reasonably active.
Lee-on-the-Solent's pub culture is relaxed and unpretentious. There are no cocktail bars or craft beer taprooms. What you get is well-kept beer, honest food, and the kind of regulars who remember your name after the second visit.
