Walks in Lee-on-the-Solent

Coastal paths, green spaces and routes for all abilities

Lee-on-the-Solent's position on the Solent coast gives it access to some of the best walking on the Hampshire shoreline. The routes range from short, flat promenade strolls suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs through to longer coastal and countryside walks that can fill a morning or afternoon.

The seafront promenade is the most popular walk in Lee-on-the-Solent. Running along Marine Parade East and West, it provides a flat, paved surface with benches, sea views, and easy access to cafes and facilities along the way. The full promenade from the sailing club to the war memorial is roughly a mile, and most walkers do a there-and-back loop of about two miles. The views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight are the constant companion, and on clear days you can pick out Ryde Pier, the Downs, and the Needles.

Extending east from the promenade takes you toward Stokes Bay and Browndown. The coast path continues along the shoreline through more natural terrain, with shingle beach and rough grassland replacing the paved promenade. This stretch adds two to three miles and is less busy, offering a quieter walking experience. Browndown's shingle ridge is exposed and atmospheric, particularly on winter days.

Westward from Lee, the coast path leads toward Hill Head, passing the Osborne View and continuing to Hill Head harbour. This is a pleasant walk of about two miles each way, with the option to stop at the Haven Cafe at Hill Head before returning. The route passes beach huts and foreshore, with Solent views throughout.

Inland, Alver Valley Country Park provides a longer walk through grassland, woodland, and wetland habitats. The park is accessible from the eastern edge of Lee-on-the-Solent and offers circular routes of varying lengths. The paths are generally well maintained, though some sections can be muddy in winter.

The route north through Stubbington connects to further countryside walking, with public footpaths crossing farmland and linking to the wider Hampshire rights of way network. Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, accessible from Hill Head, offers birdwatching walks through managed wetland and reedbeds.

All of the seafront and promenade walks are suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. The inland and coastal extension routes are less accessible, with uneven surfaces and some gradients. Sensible footwear is recommended for anything beyond the promenade.
