Cycling in Lee-on-the-Solent

Cycle routes, bike paths and cycling around the peninsula

Lee-on-the-Solent's flat terrain and coastal setting make it a pleasant place to cycle, whether for transport, exercise, or leisure. The lack of significant hills anywhere on the Gosport peninsula removes one of the main barriers to cycling, and the seafront promenade provides a ready-made route with views.

The seafront promenade along Marine Parade is shared between cyclists and pedestrians. It is flat, smooth-surfaced, and provides an enjoyable ride with Solent views. The full length from the sailing club toward Stokes Bay covers roughly two miles. Common courtesy applies: cyclists should give way to pedestrians, keep speeds moderate, and use a bell when passing. During busy summer weekends, the promenade can be crowded, and walking the bike through the busiest sections is sensible.

Beyond the promenade, Lee-on-the-Solent's residential streets are generally quiet and suitable for cycling. Traffic volumes are low on most residential roads, and the flat terrain makes getting around by bike practical for trips to the shops, schools, and local facilities.

Cycle routes connect Lee-on-the-Solent to Gosport, Stubbington, and Fareham. Some sections use dedicated cycle paths, while others share road space with motor traffic. The route to Fareham via Stubbington is the most commonly cycled link, providing access to the railway station and the town centre.

For longer rides, the Gosport peninsula offers a circuit that takes in Lee-on-the-Solent, Stokes Bay, Gosport, and back through Stubbington. This is roughly a 15-mile loop on fairly flat roads. More ambitious riders can continue to Hill Head, Titchfield, and into the Meon Valley for hillier terrain and longer distances.

Bike storage at home is straightforward for most Lee-on-the-Solent residents, as the majority of properties have garages, sheds, or side access. Public bike parking is available at the seafront and on the High Street.

Bike maintenance and repairs are available from shops in Gosport and Fareham. Lee-on-the-Solent itself does not have a dedicated bike shop, though basic supplies and accessories can be found locally.

The growing popularity of electric bikes has made cycling accessible to a wider range of residents, including those who might previously have found the distances or wind exposure off-putting. The flat terrain of the peninsula is ideally suited to e-bikes.
