Swimming in Lee-on-the-Solent

Sea swimming, pools and where to take a dip

Swimming is part of the fabric of Lee-on-the-Solent. The town's sheltered Solent beach has drawn bathers since the resort was founded in the 1880s, and open-water swimming has grown significantly in popularity in recent years.

The beach at Lee-on-the-Solent is shingle, shelving reasonably gently into the Solent. The water is shallow for some distance from the shore, which makes it suitable for paddling and wading as well as proper swimming. The Solent's enclosed waters mean that wave action is generally modest compared to open-coast beaches, creating calmer conditions for swimmers.

Water quality is monitored by the Environment Agency during the bathing season (May to September). The results are published annually and are available through the Environment Agency's Swimfo website. Lee-on-the-Solent beach has historically achieved good or excellent water quality ratings.

Open-water swimming has a growing following in Lee-on-the-Solent. Local groups organise regular swims from the beach, with participants ranging from experienced distance swimmers to newcomers trying open water for the first time. Safety is taken seriously, with tow floats, buddy systems, and awareness of tides and currents forming part of the routine. The local swimming community is welcoming and supportive of newcomers.

The Solent's water temperature ranges from around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius in winter to 18 to 20 degrees in late summer. Wetsuits extend the comfortable swimming season considerably, and a growing number of swimmers go year-round without wetsuits, embracing the cold-water swimming trend.

For pool swimming, the nearest public swimming pools are at the leisure centres in Gosport and Fareham. Both offer lane swimming sessions, family sessions, and swimming lessons. These are a ten to fifteen-minute drive from Lee-on-the-Solent.

Children's swimming lessons are available at the pools in Gosport and Fareham, with various providers running courses for all ages and abilities.

The splash park on the seafront provides water play for younger children during the summer months. It is free to use and supervised during opening hours.

Lee-on-the-Solent's swimming heritage is genuine. The Victorian resort was built around the appeal of sea bathing, and the tradition continues, albeit with wetsuits and tow floats rather than bathing machines.
